Dance/movement therapy, healing through kinesthetic awareness

When words are not enough, people express through song and dance. - The Chinese Book of Songs

In essence, body language is our “mother tongue” because we communicate through our bodies long before we learn to speak. Body and mind are interrelated and have mutual influence upon each other. In dance therapy, movement is the primary medium for expression and interaction, and for dance therapists, it is the vehicle for observation, assessment and research. So, dance therapy helps the individual become aware of their thoughts and emotions in the process of movement, making body and inner feelings congruent with each other, in order to further the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social integration of the individual.

Dance therapy was originated in the United Stated during the early 1940s, and through almost 70 years of development, dance therapy is currently practiced in over 40 countries; there are more than 50 educational institutes offer dance therapy program training undergraduate, graduate and doctorial students, and over 1200 professional dance therapists provide services at hospitals, nursing homes, psychiatric and rehabilitation facilities, daycare centers, social welfare agencies, general and special education schools, counseling centers, crisis centers, drug treatment centers, prisons and through private practice, as well as projects on physical, mental disease prevention and health promotion.

Dance therapy has been recognized by the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA), Department of Health and Human Services as an integral part of treatment programs in Medicare facilities. According to a research sponsored by Department of Health and Human Services, Washington, DC, dance/movement therapy improved participants’ functional abilities such as balance, rhythmic discrimination, mood, social interaction and energy level.

Dance therapy has enjoyed its prosperous development in Asia, espeically in Japan, Republic of Korea, India, Taiwan and Singapore. In 1981, Tsungchin Lee, Taiwan’s first dance therapist, began to work at Dept. of Psychiatry, Taipei Veterans General Hospital; in 2000, Ms. Lee was the the convener of Art in Psychology Team, 921 Disaster Renovation Project, and later in 2002, she founded Taiwan Dance Therapy Association (TDTA); since then, the Association has been hosting annual conventions and several professional workshops. In 2008, TDTA awarded the first and foremost official certificates in Taiwan with a total of more than 20 certificate dance therapists.

There has been a stereotypical view that people with injuries or physical disabilities must undergo rehabilitation such as physical therapy, and those who with mental disabilities or behavioral problems should go to a variety of psychologists or behavioral therapists. However, such a clear-cut treatment concept makes therapy patients progress slowly, and they are still unaware of their symptoms may very likely be resulted from the interaction and mutual influence of body and mind. Dance therapy enjoys a wide range of applications, including stress management, rehabilitation, mental illness, special education, gerontology, dementia, cancer, marriage and family counseling, prison and psychiatry. Nowadays, with the emphasis on holistic healthcare of body and mind, dance therapy is expected to thrive in Taiwan and other Asian countries.

For people who undergo dance therapy, no matter the purpose is educational, healing or therapeutic, it is a “rebirth” from the inside out. They were given opportunities to face and experience their own abundant inner emotions, get to know themselves once again more thoroughly, and eventually become their own precious spiritual treasure. Moreover, their personality also matures along the way. I am sincerely happy whenever I see the client(s) expanded movement, brilliant smile and newly established friendships, because they have opened their hearts and minds, regained the energy for life, and continuously established relationships with themselves and others through dance therapy. Their agile physical movements also create more possibilities for life ahead. In this sense, we dance/movement therapists are looking forward to various supports from health professionals and the general public alike.
